2012 Summer Reading Program: Gear Up for Good

Children of all ages and families are invited to "gear" their minds toward summer reading fun while learning about community philanthropy benefiting Indy Backpack Attack during The Indianapolis Public Library's 93rd annual Summer Reading Program, "Gear Up for Good," beginning Monday, June 4 and continuing through Saturday, July 28 at all Indianapolis Public Library locations as well as the Beech Grove Public Library.

National Digital Bookmobile Tour Comes to Indianapolis

Readers of all ages can learn how to download eBooks from the Library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos when the national Digital Bookmobile visits Indianapolis on Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25. The 74-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer will be stationed outside Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street, throughout each day.

Following a national trend, Indianapolis Public Library patrons are downloading and reading Library eBooks in record numbers. New statistics released by the Library correspond with findings on Americans' reading habits by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project underwritten by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Service Hours Increased at Indianapolis Libraries

Beginning May 13, Indianapolis public libraries will provide additional hours of service with consistent opening and closing times following action by The Indianapolis Public Library Board of Trustees on March 26, 2012. The new schedule will restore hours at all libraries rather than just the busiest locations, which originally had been proposed in the Library's 2012 budget. Total weekly hours of service will increase from 980 to 1,247 with at least six days of service at all locations. Thursday service at Central Library downtown will return as well as Friday and Saturday service at all branches.

It's Time to Call-a-Pacer!

Children and families are invited to listen to their favorite stories in children's literature recorded by players from the Indiana Pacers or representatives of the Pacers organization on The Indianapolis Public Library's free 24-hour Call-a-Story telephone line at 275-4444. Beginning April 2 and continuing through the month of June, Pacers players can be heard reading stories from such authors as Dr. Seuss, Laura Numeroff and Eric Carle.

First-Ever Comprehensive Indianapolis School Chooser Guide Available at Library Locations

An informational guide to help parents make well-informed school decisions to meet the needs of their children is available at all 23 locations of The Indianapolis Public Library. At a news conference on Wednesday, March 7 at Central Library, Library CEO Jackie Nytes joined Mayor Greg Ballard and Stand for Children Indianapolis Director Karega Rausch to kick off the distribution of the comprehensive Indianapolis School Chooser Guide.

Indy Library Adds Local Firefighting Photos to Digital Collection

A collection of over 900 photographs documenting firefighting in Indianapolis from 1874 to 1939 has been added to The Indianapolis Public Library's online digital library. The new images come from the photo collection of early 20th century Indianapolis firefighter Harold Brown Adkinson which resides at the Indiana State Library. The Adkinson photos have been incorporated into the Library's digital library of over 2,100 historic firefighting images that include local African-American firefighters and scenes from such tragic events as the Bowen-Merrill fire of 1890, the Coliseum explosion in 1963, and the Grant building fire in 1973.

Spades Park Branch Celebrates 100th Anniversary!

City Councillor Steve Talley Endows Special Indianapolis Library Fund for Children's Programming

With the goal of fostering learning and opportunity for children throughout Indianapolis, District 11 City-County Councillor Steve Talley has announced a major share of his current and future council salary will be devoted to a new endowment for additional children's programming through The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation. The Donna D. Talley Story Theatre Fund will honor Talley's late wife who believed in reading as the key to unlocking a child's potential. The fund, established by the Library Foundation and managed by Central Indiana Community Foundation, began with a founding gift of $25,000 from Tim and Tanya Harris. That gift will be supplemented with contributions by Talley from his council salary over the next four years totaling approximately $52,000, along with a 100% contribution from his future City-County Council retirement plan.

Library Foundation opens nominations for 2012 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award

Individuals are encouraged to nominate their favorite Hoosier author for the 2012 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award, a program of The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation which recognizes the contributions of Indiana authors to the literary landscape in Indiana and across the nation. Nominations are being accepted through March 23, 2012. The award is funded by the The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation.

24th Annual "Meet the Artists" Exhibit and Gala Presented at Central Library

The entire community is invited to view the works of locally prominent African-American artists during the "Meet the Artists XXIV" exhibit February 3 through March 31 at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair St. In celebration of the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis, this year's artistic theme is "A Post Super Bowl Extravaganza." Works representing a variety of artistic mediums will be presented by 15 local artists.

Jackie Nytes Begins Tenure as CEO of The Indianapolis Public Library

The 14th director in The Indianapolis Public Library's illustrious history dating to 1873 has begun her tenure as the Library's Chief Executive Officer. Jackie Nytes succeeds Laura Bramble, who retired after 41 years in the library industry including the past four years serving as Library CEO. Nytes recently ended an 12-year stint as Indianapolis City County Councillor in District 9 and a four-year term as Executive Director of the Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation.
